Question 6 What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Before I started college, the only media I was involved with was my mobile phone, my pc, ipod, television and stereo.

However, once I had started my AS Media lessons I was introduced to many different kinds of technology. I was firstly introduced to the Apple Mac computers which I found harder to use than the original pc's. I was also introduced to many different programmes such as Livetype, Sound track pro and Final cut pro which I used to make our thriller. I also found myslef using Youtube and Google to research films to get inspiration.

Question 7 Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?

Since our preliminary task, I feel our group have progressed dramatically. For exmaple:
  • The mise en scene in our preliminary task didn't match up to what was happening in the scene, for example it was an intense card game but was filmed in a classroom. However, for our final product, we filmed in places that were relevant to our film.
  • In our preliminary task, our camera skills were not accurate as we wasn't making sure that there wasn't any access, un needed space in the shot, making sure if filming a person their eye level was three quearters up the shot, keeping the shot in perfect focus and wasn't using the tripod to keep the shot still. However, learning from these mistakes, we made sure our camera skills were accurate.
  • In our preliminary task, we didn't think about camera angles to create an effect. For example, in our thriller, the camera was tilted down towards the 'victim' as she ran to show her lack of control of the situation. However, in our preliminary task, most shots of people, no matter what status they were at, were just full on.

Question 1 In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In the above video, we have compared 9 shots from the film 'Panic Room' to 9 shots from our thriller film 'Chasing Fate'. The similar codes and conventions in both pieces were:
  • The Production team were shown first.
  • Both main characters were established at the beggining.
  • The Mise en scene created a thriller effect. For example, the red static effect in our thriller, and the dark, gloomy room in 'Panic room'.
  • The pace of the editing were both quick changes.
  • They both have extreme close ups.

Question 7-Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?

These are still images of the preliminary task and our final product. Our preliminary task lacked acting skill, good angling and good camera quality. Our preliminary video had a childish plot and at one point we even blew away one of the characters with a fan :(.
When it came to us thinknig of a storyline for the final task we took into consideration much more aspects of media including camera angles, editing, sound etc.
It is clear from watching both clips that our skills in media have inproved dramatically.

Question 1 - In what does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media?

Our media product has challenged the typical codes and conventions by not appearing as thrilling as many commerical thriller openings that are in media. Although our thriller opening contains aspects of suspense and thrilling effects, it doesnt appear to be 100% thrilling.
From the reaction of the audience it is clear that some parts of the opening were 'thrilling' while other parts were more commical.
In terms of camera work and editing, I think that our media product has the potential to reach larger more critical audiences. Our match cuts are of a high standard and this would be seen as a good starting point for the product to gain more viewings from global audiences.
I think that our opening lacks a proper story beginning, meaning that audiences do not understand what our opening is about. This is of course another way that our product has challenged the codes and conventions of a real media product.
